Corpus Christi Newspaper article reveals the uncertainty and deception of the Packery Channel Project that was sold to voters as a "Boat Pass".  The Army Corps of Engineers is prohibited by law from dredging such a boat pass. Read the article... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  Army Corps of Engineers prepares to dredge a $30+ million recreational boat pass to the Gulf of Mexico under cloak of an environmental and storm damage project. The Corps is not allowed by law to dredge a recreational boat pass. Read a recent Newspaper account of this project... What is the  Packery Channel project ? For years Packery Channel promoters and politicians have been trying to sell the public on a "Recreational Boat Pass with a Private Resort Development".

News Flash   NOAA Fisheries recommends that a Department of Army permit NOT be granted for the dredging of Packery Channel as currently proposed.   In a letter dated July 29, 2002, National Marine Fisheries Services (NOAA Fisheries) made the recommendation along with a request for a written response from the Army Corps of Engineers. The deadline for the written response is 30 days from the receipt of the letter submitted to the Army Corps of Engineers.  more...

Dredging News On-line even reports it as a channel to provide boats with
access to the Gulf of Mexico. 

The US Army Corps of Engineers is prohibited from constructing such a channel.

Protection of the 4,500 ft. long sea wall and the small bulkheaded island of private property immediately behind it is the principal objective of this project, according to Senator Hutchison’s Bill. Study finds Packery Channel will not improve Laguna Madre

The long-awaited study by PBS&J of possible environmental improvements in Laguna due to construction of Packery Channel has just been released to the public by the Galveston District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers . 

The study was apparently finished in October, but release has been delayed by pressure from pro-Packery politicians, because the results do not support their wish to build Packery Channel. In fact, the study shows Packery Channel cannot be built under Federal guidelines for environmental enhancement, because the environmental benefits 
are negative to negligible and the cost of 
construction is high.  more...

Land Commissioner Mauro and others state the scientists reviewing the Naismith Engineering feasibility study of Packery Channel determined the Packery Channel plan is feasible.

Yes, the peer review said that Packery Channel is feasible, if a large enough budget is available for annual dredging maintenance; However, the reviewers disputed several conclusions drawn by the Naismith Study:  more...
